Misuse of Artificial Intelligence Tools Among University Students and Its Implications for Academic Integrity

M.P.N.S. Peiris

The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and other generative systems has significantly transformed learning practices in higher education. While these technologies provide valuable academic support, their misuse has raised serious concerns regarding academic integrity. This study investigates the use and misuse of AI tools among undergraduate students and examines their implications for academic integrity. A mixed-method research design was employed, combining a quantitative survey of undergraduate students with qualitative interviews conducted among lecturers and academic administrators. The survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while interview data were examined through thematic analysis. The findings reveal that a majority of students actively use AI tools for academic purposes, with a notable proportion relying on AI-generated content for completing assignments. The study also identifies key challenges faced by educators in detecting AI-assisted work and highlights a lack of clear institutional policies governing AI usage. The results emphasize the need for universities to establish guidelines and promote ethical awareness to ensure responsible use of AI in academic environments.
